My thoughts about being a multilingual person

Obraz
As the semester is ending, I consider it appropriate to talk a little about the benefits of learning languages in general. Most people look for specific reasons, however, mine are simple and lead us to discover the usefulness of knowing different languages. I hope you will see my point and understand why I am learning so many tongues. Since I was a child I have been trying to acquire five languages. Sometimes I lacked experience and perseverance. Eventually, I am learning three different tongues for many reasons. Here I am going to add up some of them which I consider original. 1.        If I hadn’t known English, I would  never  have learned how to play the guitar Once I got interested in playing the guitar, I realized that English is the language that can make my self-study easier. There is an enormous numer of guides, videos and books created in this language, where you can find out how to do palm muting, where „pick-ups” are ...

Educational neuroscience

Obraz
When I first went to school as a future teacher, not as a student, I was a little bit upset with one thought. How would I encourage my students to study my subject? It is said that passion is crucial but I knew it wouldn't be enough. I felt need to study more about psychology, pedagogy and, especially, the theory of teaching. A good teacher knows that his work consists not only in giving lessons but self-improvement as well. I was lucky because I met a wonderful woman who worked as pedagogue and employment counselor. At school everybody has plenty of duties, nonetheless, she was the person who taught me stuff I will never forget. Today, I am going to write about a special handbook every teacher should know. “NEURODYDAKTYKA – Nauczanie i uczenie się przyjazne mózgowi” written by Marzena Żylińska, a   methodology specialist, AMU doctor of didactics of foreign languages is in my opinion an obligatory book for those who want to teach languages, not only at school. 8 benefits of reading

Obraz
Today, reading books is not so common hobby because of increasing importance of digital devices. Unfortunately, there are less people who enjoy spending time with a book. Here, we will focus on benefits you should take into account, if you aren’t convinced of reading. At first, there is an impression that this kind of activity requires big effort and time from you. However, if you choose right book, the time will pass quickly.   1.       Chilling out Some studies claims that reading can help us to relax even better than walking or listening to music. Thus, it is well recommended to read at least 15 minutes per day. 2.       Mental stimulation A human learns all his life. Why is it so? People are used to say that learning proces doesn’t end definitely with high school or University graduation. And it is true because there are so many books which can expand our knowledge and stimulate our brain! If we read a book paper, we ar...

The winners – Julio Cortázar’s first novel

Obraz
While I was developing my knowledge about literature, I’ve heard about Cortázar many times. Usually I wasn’t convinced to read his books because of its complexity. And I always believed that good stories have to be easy to get though. In a way I know I’m right. Not everybody has to have gift to read between the lines. Nonetheless, this is what Cortázar requires from his readers. Julio Cortázar is an Argentinian writes who lived many years in Brussels, French and Spain. His experience of communing with European intelligence helped him to create own, unique style. A very characteristic feature of his art is numerous references to European history, culture and literature. If you want to get to know about the ambiance of his prose, you should study world’s history, philosophy and arts. It should be a big challenge. After all, I gave it a try and a read Cortázar’s first novel which he called “The winners”. As the name shows in the story somebody has to win something. Nothing more w...

Seitsemän veljestä - Seven Brothers – first published Finnish novel

Obraz
At the same time this book is the first Finnish story I’ve read. I was really astonished by its low price, and, I was afraid that I wouldn’t receive my order. When the packet arrived to my home, I had an impression that there were only cardboard inside. Thankfully it was just well packed and nobody wanted to cheat on me. Generally, when it comes to learn about any country’s history and language, it is recommended to read some compelling books written by people from there. Once I got interested in Finland, I realized that in order to understand Finns I should discover their art. Definitely I would recommend this book to all people who like laughing and who appreciate history. In Alexis Kivi novel we discover tough conditions of living in a village. (The seven brothers on 1970 postage stamp) Juhani, Aapo, Tuomas, Simeoni, Timo, Lauri and Eero have something in common – they don’t want to adapt to society’s expectations. They avoid like a fire learning to write and read. Besid...

Muuminlakso - Moominvalley

Obraz
The Moomins is my favourite Finnish fairy tale. Moominvalley is the place where the characters live. Their world has no people or streets. There is only nature, Moomins and some other animals. They look like hippos but have only two legs. Sometimes there you can meet Mörkö (the Groke). It is similar to a stone, walks very slowly and causes fear. It cannot even talk but emits cold and sad atmosphere. Generally, this is a melancholic world where sometimes is dangerous but you can always count on your friends. 1.        CHARACTERS Moomintroll – he’s the main character in the fairy tale. The little boy is very excited about everything, sometimes gets into trouble but always tries to see the positivity Moominpappa – Moomitoll’s and Snork’s daddy. He’s innocent and he likes to dream. He’s a writes and spents a lot of time creating diaries and dramas. His wife treats him with humor, helping him to deal with all problems. Moominmamma – Moomintroll’s and ...

Tlacuache legend

Obraz
Now I consider appropiate mentioning about tlacuache, a mythical animal, which I had wanted to describe in cultural essay but I found this topic to ancient (we were supposed to write a mythic symbol in Spanish contemporary literature). I coudn’t permit myself to leave an idea of studying about this little creature you can see below. Let’s talk about the significant Mesoamerica’s   symbol. The legend tells a story of tiny Mexican marsupial. It brought flame and knowledge to mankind. Tlacuache is a very important animal for mazatecas. Repeatedly, it is compared to Prometheus, who according to Antient Greeks brought flame to humanity. Before people knew the application of flame, darkness and cold had been controling nights. This way live was difficult. The darkness made people eat raw food and the cold froze their bodies. All humankind was waiting winter’s end. It is said that some day appeared a star that soon fell. An old lady took the light and brought it to her home. ...

Puhdistus – Purge, a novel of Finnish-Estonian writer, Sofi Oksanen

Obraz
In this text I want to share with you how much I felt agitated by Oksanen’s literary output. This author writes in Finnish, although her mother comes from Estonia. Sofi Oksanen had lived some time in Estonia and had experienced lack of understanding in relation to her origin.   That’s why the artist wants to tell about her vision of women’s rights. And she does it very well, we know that because of numerous regards and critics’,readers’ and even politics’ recognition. Being only 31 year old, she have received the most prestigious award, Finlandia-palkinto for Puhdistus(Purge). Besides, she’s the first foreign author who won Prix du Roman fnac. Oksanen’s books cause violent reactions and controversy, equally in Finland, Estonia and Russia. She made her mission of showing and transmiting knowledge about recent history of these regions. In Finnish prose, she is classified as ambitious psychological current. Undoubtedly, she’s one of the most influential female writers of this t...
