Muuminlakso - Moominvalley

The Moomins is my favourite Finnish fairy tale. Moominvalley is the place where the characters live. Their world has no people or streets. There is only nature, Moomins and some other animals. They look like hippos but have only two legs. Sometimes there you can meet Mörkö (the Groke). It is similar to a stone, walks very slowly and causes fear. It cannot even talk but emits cold and sad atmosphere. Generally, this is a melancholic world where sometimes is dangerous but you can always count on your friends.

1.       CHARACTERS

Moomintroll – he’s the main character in the fairy tale. The little boy is very excited about everything, sometimes gets into trouble but always tries to see the positivity

Moominpappa – Moomitoll’s and Snork’s daddy. He’s innocent and he likes to dream. He’s a writes and spents a lot of time creating diaries and dramas. His wife treats him with humor, helping him to deal with all problems.

Moominmamma – Moomintroll’s and Snork’s mum. She’s understanding, patient and tolerant. An interesting behaviour of hers is that she knows how to protect family. We observe that in an episode in which she calms down eveybody when the Groke comes.

Little My – She’s a little malignant girl. Sometimes she behaves selfishly and agrresively. Nevertheless she knows life’s bright sides. She always talks and does what she wants. She belongs to  mymmeli’s creatures.

Sniff – is a creature who lives in Moomin’s house. It always want to be in the centre of attention. On the other hand Sniff is a little bit coward.

Snufkin – he’s my favourite character. Snufkin is a philosopher. He loves thinking and spending time alone. He’s Moomintroll’s best friend. When winter is coming, he makes a long trip by himselff. He wore a big hat and old coat and his most recognizable item is harmonica.

Snork – is delighted by everything, ful of joy. He is also naive but has big heart and knows how to forgive

Snork Maiden – she’s Moomin’s best friend and believes being his girlfriend. She changes her mind very often. Looking well is very important for her.

2.       MOOMIN WORLD YOU CAN VISIT

Moomin House exists indeed. You can visit Moominvalley and home in Naantali, Turku. (South Finland). Last time I spoke to my friend who lived there I heard that tickets cost near 50€.

3.       TRANSLATION

Tove Jansson is a Finnish writer, painter and cartoonist who comes from Swedish speaking family. (This phenomenon occurs very often in Finland because Swedish is second official language of Finland. It is related to its history). The Moomins were translated into over 50 languages.

4.       Moomin’s mugs

I remember some day when my friends talked about mugs with moomins, to my great surprise it costs an arm and a leg!
